Coding for Predictive Built Environments: Building and Street Typology Choices in Form-Based Codes

Form-based codes (FBCs) pursue alternative built environments that integrate design-focused approaches for the purpose of fostering predictable development outcomes. The emphasis FBCs on legitimate building types and physical parameters may provide local authorities with new opportunities to incent a variety sustainable design features. Despite code’s recent popularity in urban infill suburban retrofit projects, little research exists explain expected benefits form-based approaches. This study evaluates evolution across diverse cities by relating range geographical scales differing contextual conditions. Focusing five adopted United States between 2010 2015, street elements are analyzed investigate linkages context supplements prior coding demonstrating metropolitan contexts can help how placemaking goals be achieved. typology framework presented this paper also serves as minimum set standards reconciling public’s expectation amenities private sector’s willingness contribute their resources environment.
